Jean-François de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse (1741-1788). He was Captain when King Louis XVI entrusted him with a mission of scientific exploration around the world. He left Brest in 1785 with two ships: “l’Astrolabe” and “la Boussole”. We now know that both ships were shipwrecked, caught by a cyclone in the middle of the Pacific, in the bay of the remote island of Vanikoro (Solomon Islands). In 1793, just before going to the scaffold, King Louis XVI is said to have asked: “Is there any news of Monsieur de Lapérouse? Made by Gustave Vertunni, France, circa 1950. Solid lead figurine. Scale 55mm to eye line. Overall height: 60 – 65mm.
