Général Pierre Cambronne (1770-1842). Major of the Imperial Guard, he commands the last square of the old guard at Waterloo. Summoned by the English to surrender, he pronounced this oh-so-famous sentence: “The Guard dies but does not surrender!”. He added a little five-letter word, which the French know well.
