Joséphine de Beauharnais (shown here in civilian clothes). Marie Josèphe Rose de Tascher de La Pagerie (1763-1814). From her first marriage to Alexandre de Beauharnais, she had two children: Eugène and Hortense. In her second marriage, she married a Corsican general, Napoléon Bonaparte. It was Napoleon Bonaparte who gave her the name Josephine for posterity. On December 2, 1804, she was crowned Empress of the French by Emperor Napoleon 1st. Their divorce was finalized in 1809, due to a lack of offspring. From her marriage to Louis Bonaparte, the Emperor’s brother, Hortense de Beauharnais gave birth to Charles Louis Napoléon, the future Napoléon III… Josephine’s grandson.
