Bertrand du Guesclin, Constable of France (1320-1380). He began his military career under the reign of Jean Le Bon, in the clan of Charles de Blois, who claimed the Duchy of Brittany on behalf of his wife Jeanne de Penthièvre. In 1370, at the beginning of Charles V’s reign, he was awarded the title of Connétable, thanks to his numerous feats of arms, including the victory at Cocherel (1364). His charisma was such that he commanded the admiration and respect of his soldiers and adversaries alike. Courageous and cunning, he succeeded in driving out the “great companies” that had been devastating France since the sad defeat at Poitiers (1356). He was the armed wing of Charles V, who, thanks to Du Guesclin, recovered almost all the provinces that had become English under the Treaty of Brétigny in 1360. He died during the siege of Châteauneuf-de-Randon in 1380. Early manufacture by Gustave Vertunni, France, circa 1950. Solid lead figurine. Scale 55mm to eye line. Overall height: 60 – 65mm.
