Jean II de Valois, known as “Le Bon” (1319-1364). Son of Philippe VI and Jeanne de Bourgogne. He became King in 1350 on the death of his father, and had to fight the Black Prince, Duke of Aquitaine, who was devastating southern France at the head of the Anglo-Gascons. Opposition and betrayal by Charles le Mauvais, King of Navarre, undermined his authority. The indiscipline of French chivalry cost him the battle of Poitiers (1356), where he was taken prisoner. Although his reign was questionable, he is credited with bringing Dauphiné and Burgundy under his crown. Made by Gustave Vertunni, France, circa 1950. Solid lead figurine. Scale 55mm to eye line. Overall height: 60 – 65mm.
