Alexander 1st Tsar of Russia (1777-1825). Grandson of Empress Catherine, he reigned from 1801 to 1825. Opposed to the ambitions of Napoleon I, his armies, allied with Austria, Prussia and England, were severely defeated at Austerlitz (1805), Eylau and Friedland (1807). Despite the Treaty of Tilsitt (1807), which made peace between France and Russia, the war resumed. The terrible winter of 1812, and the resistance of Alexander’s Russian troops, finally defeated Napoleon’s Grande Armée. Made by Gustave Vertunni, France, circa 1950. Solid lead figurine. Scale 55mm to eye line. Overall height: 60 – 65mm.
