Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, Marquise de Sévigné (1626-1696). She was born in the heart of Paris, at number 1 Place Royale (now Place des Vosges), into an old noble family. She was naturally drawn to the court, which she observed with a keen eye. Widowed at 25, she began a correspondence with her eldest daughter, who lived in Marseille. This correspondence has survived intact. It is a priceless treasure trove of knowledge about the Age of Enlightenment, as seen and experienced by the reigning aristocracy.
