Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821). Born in Corsica to a noble family, he studied at Brienne on the mainland, then in Paris at the École Militaire, where he specialized in artillery. His rise to prominence was rapid. In 1793, he became a general in the armies of the First Republic. His successes in the Italian and Egyptian campaigns brought him to the forefront. Brought to power in 1799 by the coup d’état of 18 Brumaire, he became First Consul until May 18, 1804, when the Empire was proclaimed. Early manufacture by Gustave Vertunni, France, circa 1940.
