Henri de Lorraine, Duc de Guise (1550-1588). He was one of the main leaders of the Catholic party during the Wars of Religion. He took part in the St. Bartholomew’s Day massacre. His political ambition eventually irritated King Henri III, who ordered his assassination in Blois in 1588. “He is even greater, dead than alive”, the king is said to have remarked as he contemplated his corpse.
