Charles V of Habsburg (1500-1558). He inherited from his parents a colossal Empire that included Castile and Aragon, the Kingdom of Naples, Austria, Hungary, Bohemia and the Netherlands as well as Burgundy and Franche-Comté. Elected Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in 1519, he could not withstand the pressure of the wars against France and the Turks as well as the troubles caused by the rise of Protestantism.
